The Lighthouse Project is a North Tyneside Council initiative run in conjunction with The Cyrenians which provides floating housing support to people in their own tenancies. The service is available to single people, couples and families.
Support will be given to assist in the development of social and life skills needed to sustain a tenancy and to integrate with the local community.
The support provided addresses housing and other practical needs such as:
- Homelessness or the threat of homelessness
- Difficulties in managing their own home
- Returning to their home from supported or emergency accommodation, residential care, hospital or prison
- Rent or mortgage arrears, help with budgeting, paying bills, and debts
- Unsuitable accommodation
- Welfare rights advice
- Help with applying for grants and loans
- Finding furniture
- Information on local facilities
- Access to health care, leisure, transport, support and activity groups
- Information on basic home security, maintenance and dealing with emergencies
- Access to specialist advice and support agencies to meet individual needs
- Help with filling in forms
- Advocacy e.g. someone to talk on your behalf on issues you feel you can’t handle
- Building self confidence
- Help with finding a job, paid or voluntary and training
- Friendship and emotional support
What our clients say:
“I knew I was going to have difficulties paying my rent and monthly bills and I’m not a strong enough person both mentally and emotionally to deal with the organisations chasing me for the money I owed. But with the support from the Lighthouse staff I now have control of my debts and my life is returning to normal.”
“I contacted the Lighthouse Project as I was spending all of my time in my home very isolated brought on by ill health. My health has improved but I had lost contact with my friends and family and had no confidence to do anything. Through the support from my key worker at the Lighthouse Project we put together an action plan to encourage me to access local training courses and events as a way of social integration. I then began attending sessions at the Meadows’ community centre doing first aid, health and beauty, nature in the garden and yoga. This has been life changing for me. I now know where to go if I have any problems I can’t handle myself.”
