DASS - Domestic Abuse Support Service

DASS is an outreach service which provides one-to-one and group-work support to women who are experiencing or have survived domestic abuse.

We provide carefully tailored emotional and practical support according to personal circumstances; unique to the needs of each individual, covering all aspects of their life with an absolute guarantee of confidentiality.

Our aim is to help those in need be safe, independent and empowered and to help keep them moving forward in a direction of their choosing. We work in a multi-disciplinary way, often liaising with other agencies, to provide an holistic, needs-led service.

Domestic abuse is controlling behaviour which can take the form of emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, financial control, threats or harassment. It is often used to maintain power and control over another person, often an intimate partner or a family member.

Whatever form the abuse takes the end result is usually the same, isolation, fear and the loss of self confidence and self esteem. So-called honour crimes, forced marriage and female genital mutilation are also forms of domestic abuse.

Domestic abuse can be common-place, crossing social groups, income levels throughout society regardless of age, sexuality, ethnicity, ability and lifestyle.

The completely confidential service we provide to women living in North Tyneside includes help with:

  • safety planning
  • housing needs
  • health
  • children’s well-being
  • money management
  • socialisation
  • personal development
  • training and education
  • paid or voluntary work
  • domestic abuse awareness to those who have already, or are planning to leave, a relationship
