Since moving to Newcastle upon Tyne from Bangladesh in 1980 aged three months, Dipu has spent almost all of his life in the Region. Educated in Newcastle Dipu became actively involved in working with community groups and youth projects whilst still at school. He has worked for Newcastle City Council as a part time Children and Young People’s Officer and Gateshead Council as a Youth and Community Education Worker. He joined Newcastle Bangladesh Association as Development Manager in 2005 and was involved in restructuring the organisation. In 2007 he was elected as a Councillor for Newcastle upon Tyne, representing the Elswick ward.
Dipu has facilitated a number of conferences on racism and Equality and Diversity. He currently sits on Community Action on Health, New Deal for Communities and Safe Neighbourhoods Action & Problem Solving (SNAPS) and is an advisor to the Development of Ethnic Education Network (DEEN).
