Horticulture

NE4 VEG is based in the walled garden of our direct access project Elliott House. An organic garden has been created growing rare and heritage vegetables which are sold to the general public and local restaurants and are used in our own kitchens.

The project provides training in horticulture for interested hostel residents and members of the local community, giving those completing the programme a good opportunity to move on to careers in horticulture. NE4 VEG produces high quality food in an environmentally friendly manner.

We use rapid composting, a wormery, comfrey fertilizer, methane gas heating, solar energy and other natural methods to extend the traditional organic and environmentally positive methods already employed. As the food is produced and sold locally, it has very low ‘foodmiles’. We also keep hens and have developed a wildlife area.

We need volunteers to help us with gardening work, as well as people with hard landscaping / DIY skills.

The main tasks usually involve maintenance of the gardens and our allotment site in the west End of Newcastle.

Some tasks may be physically demanding but the rewards are great, spending time in our walled garden is a very relaxing and therapeutic experience!
