Sharon Hodgson MP Visits The Cyrenians FareShare North East

Today, Sharon Hodgson, Labour Member of Parliament for the Washington and Sunderland West Constituency and Shadow Education Minister paid a visit to The Cyrenians FareShare North East.

Greeted by Michael Shields, General Manager and Austen Hempstead, Chairman, she was introduced to the concept of FareShare - preventing prefectly good food going to landfill and instead distributing it to local, needy community groups.

Sharon was also impressed with the idea behind the iCan campaign, which encourages businesses, schools, groups, clubs and even neighbours to dedicate a day or week to hosting an iCan event. Particpants of the event each pledge to donate at least one can of food to The Cyrenians FareShare North East which is used to feed some of the most disadvantaged people in the region, in particular Sunderland and Newcastle. With large employers taking part in the campaign the amount of cans being donated soon mounts up.
